Today, tales of buried treasure are rare. But a couple taking their dog out for a walk stumbled on what may be the largest find of buried treasure in U.S. history: $10 million in 100-year-old gold coins, stuffed in six metal cans under a tree on their property in the Sierra Nevada area of California!
The coins are mostly in mint condition, with at least one expected to sell for as much as $1 million! The find includes almost 1,400 $20 gold pieces, 50 $10 gold pieces, and four $5 gold pieces, all dating from 1847 and 1894. Based on the dates and condition of the coins, it is believed they were buried over a period of time in the late 19th century.
The find has been dubbed "The Saddle Ridge Hoard" and its discovery sounds like a movie plot. Before finding the trove, the couple had noticed some unique features of the area. They recalled seeing an old empty can hanging from an old tree. The can had evidently been there so long that the tree had literally grown around it. At the time, the couple thought that the hanging can had possibly been used to hold flowers and mark a grave. They also noticed an oddly shaped rock on the nearby hill, which they nicknamed "Saddle Ridge". Even though they had often walked in that area, this was the first time they noticed a can sticking out of the ground. After they found the gold, they realized that the geographical features and the hanging can were probably markers to the site, placed by the original owners. The center of the treasure trove was located exactly ten steps between the jagged rock and the direction of the North Star.
If you'd like to own a piece of the Saddle Ridge Hoard, 90% of the find will soon go up for sale! You can purchase the gold from the official Saddle Ridge Hoard website or Amazon. The couple will keep a few coins and they plan to donate some of the money from the sale of the coins to the arts and to their local community.
